I actually love the Review Categories feature, it’s part of my daily morning routine now. But one big frustration is that a majority of the transactions it asks me to review are ones I already have active rules for. I’ve already told Rocket Money how to categorize things like Rocket Money Safety Net, or other savings apps’ transfers (under “Savings Transfer”), yet they still show up in Review Categories every day.
This causes a lot of alert fatigue because I end up re-confirming transactions I’ve already automated. The whole point of setting up rules is to reduce repeated effort, but right now it feels like I’m just verifying the same thing twice.
Ideally, once a rule exists and matches a transaction, it shouldn’t appear in Review Categories at all — except in special cases. For example, if I have a rule for a recurring transaction with the same merchant name and amount, that should auto-categorize as usual. But if Rocket Money detects a transaction that matches the same merchant name but has a different amount (like a one-off purchase from a site I usually have a subscription with), that should be flagged for manual review. Basically: only prompt me when something deviates from the rule’s usual pattern.
By the way:
There’s also a separate issue where some rules just don’t seem to apply even though they exist. I’ll see a transaction show up in Review Categories that should’ve matched an existing rule, but it didn’t. When I go to Manage Transaction to make a new rule, it says “Existing rule already exists,” which makes me wonder why the original rule didn’t catch it. It seems like some rules either don’t apply consistently or overlap in ways that prevent them from triggering correctly.
